Hiking is one of the Fastest-growing Outdoor Activities in the World
People everywhere are getting out on the trail near where they live and traveling to embark on in national parks and wilderness areas around the globe.
Let’s face it, many outdoor adventure activities are limited to certain demographics. biking, rock climbing, mountaineering, skiing…these are all amazing sports. But they aren’t very forgiving. Young people in their 20’s and even 30’s can get away with some tumbles, but for people who are older or have physical limitations, a bad crash or accident can mean months or years of recovery. And, they have a high cost of entry.
Hiking on the other hand is something people of almost any age with any budget can do, and it’s conducive to many physical limitations. Walking and hiking are easy on your joints (most of the time – some downhill hikes can be jarring), good for your back, healthy for your bones, and great for your heart and lungs (especially if there’s some uphill.) These characteristics make hiking an outstanding activity for a majority of people who want to get out more often and be more active.
Being out hiking in nature is perhaps the healthiest activity available, rejuvenating the soul, challenging our bodies, and quietening our minds. Hiking has plenty of advantages: we can enjoy fresh air, great views, the smell and sounds of nature and it is a great exercise form.
Remember, stay positive and take one step at a time.
Hiking will teach you how to be present, in a funny way. Letting the mind wander off to possibilities of future exhaustion etc. is unhelpful; taking one step at a time keeps you focused on the here and now, appreciating each precious moment. When you’re on a huge hike and feeling tired, you might find yourself just beyond the halfway point and realizing it’s pointless to turn back anyway.
We might not always make the best decisions, and things won’t always go as we plan, but in the end, it’s all worth it. If it doesn’t feel like that, it probably isn’t the end.
